The Year-End Compliance Calendar: Every Nigerian Employer Obligation for Q4 2026 and Q1 2027

The Nigerian employer who enters Q4 without a compliance calendar is not managing compliance. They are reacting to it, discovering obligations as their deadlines arrive, filing under pressure, and accumulating the penalty exposure that rushed compliance consistently produces.

The employer who reads this article in October has time to build the calendar that Q4 and Q1 require. The one who reads it in December has less time but still has options. The one who reads it in February, after the deadlines have passed, is managing the consequences.

This is the full calendar. Build from it.

Q4 2026 Compliance Obligations

October 10: Q3 PAYE Returns. The monthly PAYE remittances for July, August, and September must be reconciled and confirmed against State Internal Revenue Service receipts for each relevant state. Any new hires added in Q3 whose TINs were not linked to payroll at the point of joining must be corrected before this date. Multi-state employers must file separately with each relevant SIRS.

October NSITF Annual Premium. The 1% of total annual payroll contribution to the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund is due annually. If not yet filed for 2026, October is the correct month to calculate from the year-to-date payroll and submit, rather than waiting for year-end when the final payroll figure changes the calculation.

Monthly (10th of each month): PAYE Remittances for October, November, December. Each month’s PAYE must reach the relevant SIRS by the 10th of the following month. October PAYE is due November 10. November PAYE is due December 10. December PAYE, which includes any year-end bonuses, 13th month payments, or supplementary income is due January 10, 2027.

Monthly (within 7 working days of salary payment): Pension Remittances. The Contributory Pension Scheme requires that employer and employee contributions reach the relevant PFA within seven working days of salary payment. This obligation does not change in Q4. What changes is that Q4 has two bonus payment events, mid-year performance bonuses and year-end payments each of which attracts pension contributions on the bonus amount if it is classified as part of emoluments. The pension treatment of bonus payments is a specific calculation that should be confirmed with the PFA before Q4 payments are made.

November-December: ITF Annual Return. Companies with five or more employees are required to file an annual return with the Industrial Training Fund and pay the 1% of total annual payroll contribution. The ITF return preparation, calculating the annual payroll base, verifying the approved training expenditures that are eligible for reimbursement, and assembling the documentation should be done in October so the November filing is not rushed.

Q1 2027 Compliance Obligations

January 10, 2027: December 2026 PAYE Remittance. The PAYE on December salaries, bonuses, and all year-end supplementary income is due on January 10. This is typically the largest single monthly PAYE obligation of the year, and the employer who has not pre-calculated and provisioned for it will be scrambling in the first two weeks of January.

January 31, 2027: Annual PAYE Returns. The full-year employer return to the FIRS, summarising all PAYE deducted and remitted for January through December 2026, is due January 31. This document requires: the complete payroll record for all employees for all twelve months, reconciled against the monthly remittance receipts. The employer who begins this reconciliation in January is filing a rushed return. The employer who began it in October is filing an accurate one.

January: Pension Annual Reconciliation. The PFA will issue annual statements for each employee. The employer’s obligation is to ensure that the full year’s contributions, including any months where the seven-day window was missed and penalties accumulated are fully reconciled and any outstanding amounts paid.
